Merrylands is just south of Parramatta, and 25 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. Holroyd and Guildford are nearby. It is a large and thriving suburb with plenty of facilities for local people. There is a busy shopping and restaurant area around its railway station, including the Stockland Centre, an undercover mall. There are several open spaces in the suburb, such as Merrylands Park, which has its own oval. It is a highly multicultural area, with around half of the population foreign-born, with large numbers from the Middle East and North Africa.
